New Product Development Engineer

Under the direction of the New Product Development group, the New Product Development Engineer leads the effort to introduce new ceramic component product offerings to the production lines.  As required, he/she will fill gaps in current process capabilities by researching alternative innovative approaches, identifying promising alternatives, and developing the best fit technology into a robust manufacturing process.
  • Responsible for bringing new revenue to the company by successfully launching new products to manufacturing in a rapid, efficient and quality manner.
  • Leads product development efforts, directly involved in the build and troubleshooting of qualification builds and new process development and provides direction in problem solving activities
  • Excellent communication skills with peers, management and able to work as main point of contact for customers on new products critical to the growth of CTS
  • Responsible interfacing with manufacturing and sales to develop cost models for new products
  • Capable of conveying ideas and concepts clearly and effectively through verbal and written communication.
  • Travel will be required to foreign and domestic locations.
Responsibility 1: New Product Development Percentage of Time 60%
Work as lead customer contact with primary responsibility for bringing new products to full manufacturing.  Work individually and as leader of a team to develop new processes to fill capability gaps as required.  Work closely with manufacturing to develop and deliver products to the customer from the feasibility stage to final release to mfg.
 
Responsibility 2: Product or Process Launch Percentage of Time 25%
Ensure new products are ready for manufacturing.  Lead the effort to launch new processes and products to manufacturing line either domestically or transfer off shore.  Lead design reviews to complete the product launch.
 
Responsibility 3: Product or Process Research and Applications Percentage of Time 10%
Research products and processes that may have potential to be disruptive technology or new technology for future application.  Apply these technologies to CTS products.
 
Responsibility 4: IP Development Percentage of Time 5%
Address shortfalls in products, materials and processes through development of creative and innovative approaches.  File disclosures for potential patents and/or trade secrets.

 
Experience
 
Minimum Time Requirements
  • Direct experience as a process or new product development engineer in a high volume manufacturing environment preferred
  • Demonstrated project management experience
  • Ability to work directly with customers to negotiate specifications and bring projects to completion
  • Experience playing a key role in the development of a new product from drawing to high volume production
  • Fundamental knowledge of statistical tools such as Mini Tab, and basic statistical methods such as gage capability, ability to setup and run designed experiments, and do statistical analysis such as t-tests.
  • Lean manufacturing/direct ceramic component manufacturing experience a plus

BS degree in engineering.  Able to lead technical initiatives and address complex issues with original solutions.

Ability to proactively develop new ideas / methodologies
Plans, conducts and oversees assignments with minimal supervision. Demonstrates strong initiative in setting and meeting goals.  Assumes overall responsibility for coordination of work related to their area of expertise.
Planning/Organizing:
Project management capability requirements
Responsible for developing and executing project plans to keep projects on time and within budget.  Presents progress to management and recommends changes as required.
Communication:
Verbal / written, negotiation skills, presentation skills
Effectively interacts with other professional staff throughout SBU.  Demonstrates awareness and understanding of related technology development both inside and outside CTS.  Able to clearly convey concepts and ideas through verbal and written communication.
Leadership:
Coaching, Mentoring, performance management responsibilities
Operates with substantial latitude for un-reviewed action.  Plans and conducts assignments.  Coordinates the appropriate allocation of resources to meet project goals and acts as the point person to resolve complex problems.
Other Job Requirements:
Travel, foreign language competence, etc.
Some travel required, up to 12 weeks per year foreign or domestic.  US citizen or green card holder.  Valid US passport and able to use personal credit card for travel with corporate reimbursement.
 

Work Position

Development engineering involves a combination of confined sitting and walking. Periods of time may require extended standing.

Activity Summary

Development engineer may be exposed to brief infrequent periods of lifting and times requiring manual dexterity.
 

Hearing / Visual

(Extent to which hearing and near, far and peripheral eyesight are required)
All lead engineers will be required to use microscopes or other analytical tools requiring good near vision.

Risk Exposure

(Potential risk of injury while on the job and any safety precautions necessary)
Use of protective eye wear and other devices required. 

Environmental Conditions

(Any noise, odor, dust, temperature extremes, chemical exposure, etc.)
Development engineers may be required to spend extensive amounts of time in a clean room environment.
