Application Engineer

Job/Position Summary

This position will provide Resident Engineer/Sales support on site at General Motors. Key responsibilities include acting as a liaison for all new product and technologies as well as identifying new opportunities to help expand our product portfolio.

Major Areas of Responsibility

  • Serve as liaison between the customer’s engineering group and CTS with respect to all design and application issues
  • Provide on-site technical support for all customer and CTS meetings for new product development and current product applications
  • Formalize specifications for new products and/or assembly applications with respect to customer requirements, design intent, and cost effective test methods and requirements
  • Support advanced quality planning activities for new products consistent with CTS guidelines and customer expectations.  This would include, but not be limited to, design FMEA’s, design validation, feasibility studies, and design of experiments
  • Support the acquisition of knowledge with respect to all mechanical and electronic systems interactions to which our products are applied in order to meet customer needs
 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to understand customer standards, specs and requirements as they pertain to CTS products, capabilities and systems reporting metrics
  • Proven track record of driving new ideas and product opportunities into the customer and delivering customer requirements and methodologies back to CTS
  • A strong understanding of product development with intimate knowledge of customer program management requirements
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to negotiate at high levels of customer management and deliver CTS message

Supplier Electrical Engineer Resident Roles & Responsibilities

  1. General:
  • The supplier resident will assume responsibility for the electrical development and release of the Product(s) to be supplied.
  • Where multiple programs are under contract, a resident engineer may be assigned to more than one program.
  1. Become proficient in the following GM Process/databases/tools:
  1. ECR – Engineering Work Order and Part Ordering system
  2. PRTS, ESIMS – Problem/Issue Tracking systems
  3. APM – Part Drawing system
  4. Embassy – Pre-Production Vehicle Build Tracking system
  5. Team Center – Specification / Document repository database
  6. GART – Warranty tracking system
  1. Support the following Electrical activities:
  1. Schedule and coordinate  Design Reviews
  2. Coordinate and manage Product Development Team (PDT) meetings.
  3. Prepare project plans, track vehicle timing requirements and part availability dates
  4. Order and track part deliveries
  5. Have access to supplier electrical circuit schematics and subcomponent specifications
  6. Responsible with the failure mode and effects analysis process
  7. Determine and investigate design and mechanization alternatives
  8. Check 3D data and prepare 2D drawings according to design guidelines
  9. Perform electrical packaging and bracket design studies
  10. Participate in Module packaging in vehicle.
  11. Assist with the updating of system requirements
  12. Resolve issues on assigned CTS or SSTS sections
  13. Perform design analysis and trade-off studies
  14. Initiate system requirement change requests
  15. Recommend additional testing and development as required
  16. Provide technical direction to relevant Engineering and Support Groups
  17. Write Engineering Work Orders (EWOs) for release and change of hardware, software, calibrations, brackets and associated fasteners
  18. Responsible for Change Approval Board (CAB) activities for Engineering Work Order (EWO) approval
  19. Perform / Support bench and vehicle software checkout
  20. Support vehicle build activities, prototype availability and perform subsystem debug
  21. Support testing and validation on proving grounds
  22. Maintain a supplier supplied break out / hardware test box with capability to fully test / evaluate the module at the resident desk or site.
  23. Assist with root cause, resolution and verification of system issues and test incidents
  24. Perform / Support quality related activities
  25. Prepare and present issues and resolutions to GM Engineering Management and Vehicle Team(s)
  26. Support Vehicle Assembly Center launch of product – including preproduction launch activities
  27. Support vehicle development activities, rides and sub-system buy-off events
  28. Perform hardware , software and/or, calibration updates to preproduction vehicles and benches
  29. Perform monthly warranty tracking of part performance in field
  30. Coordinate communication meetings between Buyer and Supplier
  31. Represent Buyer’s position when communicating with Supplier
  32. Stay abreast of new technologies and Buyer’s competition
  33. Maintain an awareness of programs and vehicle systems
  34. Upon request the appropriate Supplier personnel shall provide support during controller and vehicle calibration development trips.
  35. Support at the manufacturing facility for the Manufacturing Non Saleable, Manufacturing Saleable, and Start of Production builds
 
  1. Perform / Submit / Maintain the following: 
  1. Math Data 3D/2D
  2. Electrical Mechanization Drawings, Interface Control Documents (ICDs)
  3. DFMEA / DRBFM for all post-IVER change
  4. Assembly Plant training documents
  5. EWOs for product / process changes
  6. Engineering Change log
  7. Open Issues list
  1. Assist / Review / Approve the following:
  1. Service Manual
  2. Service Bulletin
  3. Owner’s Manual
 

Education and Experience

  • Undergraduate degree in engineering or related field
  • 3+ years of experience in engineering, product development,  and design with experience with Tier One Automotive companies and OEM’s

Physical Demands

  • Ability to work several hours at a computer
  • Ability to travel frequently (domestic and international) as needed
  • Upon request the appropriate Supplier personnel shall provide support during. The supplier shall provide local engineering support on an “as needed” basis by request of the buyer.  The supplier shall plan to provide local support for all regional benches and build events.
